"How much effort does it take to support and APC candidate properly?"

Now, that is an interesting (and often seriously underestimated) question!

So, we thought we would work it out for you, based upon our last 25 years of APC experience

and what it takes to do the supervisor/counsellor role properly.

A few basic assumptions - You have sat the APC yourself (maybe a while ago, so, are you up to date?) and you wish to support your candidate(s) fully.  The following calculation is for one candidate only but may reduce slightly for multiples (but not by much).  You don't do this day in, day out, so you will need to keep up to date with the changing process.  You are in the candidate's chosen pathway. Your candidate is undertaking an APC 24-month structured training process.  The timings do not change much for other APC routes, you generally just end up compressing the same amount of effort into a shorter timescale!

  1. Initially familiarising/updating yourself with the APC process every 4 months x 2 hours

  2. Discussing the process with your candidate at the start x 2 hours

  3. One to one, 3 monthly reviews, ( months 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 22, 23, 24) x 2 hours

  4. Case study discussion/reviews (months 6, 12, 15, 18, 21, 23) x 2 hours

  5. Presubmission document reviews x 6 hours

  6. Assessment resource centre administration/sign-off x 10 hours

  7. Presentation practice with your candidate x 2 hours

  8. Mock interviews x 6 hours

  9. Q&A Practice x 10 hours

  10. General APC administration 24 months x 0.5 hours

94 hours

Even so, that is probably not everything as other things will always arise along the way...

So, on the basis of a 37.5 hour week that is, minimum, 2.5 weeks (over a 24 month period) of support per candidate.  In cost to your company, that is probably in the region of 12.5 days at easily a £1000/day = £12,500 per candidate...

Now, when you consider it like that, it is probably worth giving us a call for a chat?

Our APC Supervisor & Counsellor services include a custom made APC Supervisor and Counsellor course which teaches you everything you need to know about what the assessors look for and how to mentor your candidates effectively
